A denture is a removable dental appliance, that is made specifically for you! Everyone is different and a prosthodontist is able to make custom trays that fit perfectly in your mouth. Dentures are designed to closely resemble your natural teeth and can even enhance your smile. If you are only missing a few teeth, a prosthodontist can fabricate a partial denture-filling in spaces where teeth are no longer there.
What is involved?
To create custom dentures, several appointments are required at our office. We will take highly detailed molds of your mouth, allowing us to create the best denture for your mouth. Once the dentures are made, we will continue to mold them through several appointments until they are the best they can be! We want to ensure the most comfortable and natural fit for your new dentures!

Dr. Samuels: Thanks so much for visiting our page. I'm Dr. Peter Samuels of Samuels Dental Arts in Gettysburg and I'm here with Dr. Julie Berger, who's a local Gettysburg denture specialist to talk to you about the art and science behind denture treatment. If you're here maybe it's because you are considering having your smile restored or maybe you have a loved one who is in need of denture treatment.
There are a lot of misconceptions about dentures and denture treatment. There's an awful lot of confusion out there due to advertisements from corporate owned dental chains and the like. Did you know that there are dental specialists that are trained and board certified in denture treatment?
I'm here with Dr. Julie Berger who's a dentist and also a board certified Prosthodontist. Dr. Berger, can you tell us a little about what you do?
Dr. Berger: Sure Peter. Well you're right. Most people have never heard of a Prosthodontist. There are several dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Most people know about oral surgeons and orthodontists. Some people have heard of periodontists, who treat gum disease and pediatric dentists who treat kids but not too many people have heard of prosthodontists.
Dr. Samuels: What's a Prosthodontist do?
Dr. Berger: Well, we have advanced training in treating patients who need dental reconstruction with removable dentures. We also have training in restoring mouths with such things as dental implants and fixed crowns and bridgework.
Dr. Samuels: Well can't any dentist do that kind of work?
Dr. Berger: Well yes. Any dentist is licensed to do anything but most dentists don't have the same training as a Prosthodontist. It's kind of like this. If you had a heart problem and needed open heart surgery you wouldn't go to your family doctor for that kind of thing even though theoretically he or she is licensed to do it. You'd want to go to a specialist who has the special training and skill to do it right.
Dr. Samuels: Well that makes sense. Can you give me an idea of your training in making dentures?
Dr. Berger: Well a dentist goes to dental school for 4 years. When they get out, they have very little experience in denture construction. They may have seen a handful of denture cases in school and nothing very complicated. I know because I'm a former dental school instructor! As a Prosthodontist I went on to do a three year full time residency at the University of Maryland after dental school and a one year fellowship after that. That's a lot of experience; about twice as much as most dentists. I made hundreds of dentures in my residency.
Dr. Samuels: Ok, but let's pretend I'm someone who thinks they need dentures. Why should I come to you? I see lots of ads for dentures and denture clinics.
Dr. Berger: Well for one I have the experience and expertise and I guess I would say honesty to explain what you can and cannot expect. I guess I would say that it's not all about the money for me. I love my specialty and Iove helping to change the lives of my patients.
Dr. Samuels: Well, what do you mean by honesty?
Dr. Berger: As a Prosthodontist I get patients referred to me by other dentists. Unfortunately I have to fix a lot of treatment that is not up to my standards.
Dr. Samuels: Can you give me an example?
Dr. Berger: Well, I don't want to get into details but let’s just say that I see quite a few patients, that if they had come to me first they would have saved a lot of headaches and problems and a lot of money.
Dr. Samuels: Well a lot of clinics offer several types of dentures. Like economy and delux. What are your thoughts about that?
Dr. Berger: I really don't get it, to tell you the truth. It's like anything else. Either you do it right or you don't do it. I mean if your surgeon offered you the economy bypass surgery what would you think? I'd run! If you buy whatever they mean by economy denture reconstruction, and you can't chew or smile or function... have you really saved anything?
Dr. Samuels: Do you think general dentists or clinics should have to tell folks that they aren't really specialists?
Dr. Berger: Well, that's a tough one. I just wish folks knew more about what a Prosthodontist can offer. We don't advertise like the clinics.
Dr. Samuels: What do you do differently?
Dr. Berger: Well mostly I take the time to do it right. Making dentures isn't like taking a few measurements and ordering from a factory in China. Every patient is unique. That's why prosthodontics is a science and an art. I always start with a thorough head and neck exam. The shape of the head and face and the amount of jaw bone structure is so important. I cringe when I see people with teeth that look like they were made for someone else's face!
Dr. Samuels: So you are looking for a natural look?
Dr. Berger: That's right. Now I will say that I can often make someone look ten years younger, but teeth should not look artificial. It's never a cookie cutter approach.
Dr. Samuels: How do you make people look younger?
Dr. Berger: Well a lot of what I do has nothing to do with teeth. If the bite isn't right the patient will have more wrinkles showing. Using special techniques that take some time and expertise I can make wrinkle reducing dentures. The teeth have to be the right length and size for the face. It's important to me to get the patient involved in the process. I always go through a try in appt so the patient can see what the final result will look like. We can tweak things along the way to get it right.
Dr. Samuels: What's new in denture treatment?
Dr. Berger: Well dental implants are a revolution in denture treatment.
Dr. Samuels: How's that? What can u do with implants that you couldn't do before?
Dr. Berger: Well, that's a whole other interview! But you know if you already wear dentures that a lot of folks have problems with the lower denture. And I'll also say I always encourage people to keep lower natural teeth for as long as possible, but if you've got no lower teeth then if I can put in one or two lower implants.... Well it's almost a miracle. Suddenly patients can stand on their heads and the lower denture stays in. They can eat healthy food again and smile and meet people and eat out. Well it changes lives!
Dr. Samuels: Who puts dental implants in?
Dr. Berger: Well that's part if my specialty. I can place and restore implants so you don't have to go to a lot of different places.
Dr. Samuels: Well, Dr. Berger, it's been a pleasure talking with you. What would you suggest to someone considering dentures?
Dr. Berger: I guess I'd just say do your research. Go to someone who is a real denture specialist. Get it done right the first time and don't just fall for advertising. It's really your body and you deserve the best treatment possible.
Dr. Samuels: Thanks Julie. It's been a pleasure talking with you. Again, Dr. Julie Berger is a dentist and prosthodontist denture specialist at Samuels Dental Arts PC, here in Gettysburg. She'd love to help you or even just talk with you to give a second opinion and let you know the most modern up to options for dentures in Gettysburg.
