When you lose teeth, you want them replaced soon. How to replace them can be a tricky decision! With the high cost of dental work, it's important to educate yourself on the options available. Let's take a look at the differences between dental implants and dentures.

Implants

A dental implant is a post which the dentist surgically implants into the jawbone. This post acts as an anchor for a replacement tooth. Many people find implants a good choice for replacing just one or two missing teeth. However, implants can also be used to replace several or even all teeth. Today it is often possible to remove teeth and place new, fixed teeth all on the same day. (TeethXpress)

Advantages of Implants

  • Once the implant is in your mouth, the replacement tooth can be treated like a normal tooth.
  • There are no food or drink restrictions.
  • Dental implants last a long time, often for the rest of the patient's life.
  • Implants are good for your dental health! They act like a normal tooth, protecting the teeth around them and stimulating the surrounding bone.
  • Implants help keep the jaw bone structure from melting away.

Disadvantages of Implants

  • Implants require some surgery.
  • The initial cost of the implants can be higher than other ways of replacing teeth.

Dentures

Dentures are a removable appliance which replaces missing teeth. A partial denture replaces teeth where there are gaps, and the denture is anchored onto existing teeth. A complete denture replaces all the teeth in the upper and/or lower jaw.

Advantages of Dentures

  • Dentures can be made to look like the rest of your teeth. They are customized for your mouth.
  • Dentures are easily adjusted. If another tooth falls out, the denture can often be modified so it contains a new replacement tooth.
  • Getting dentures does not require surgery.
  • Dentures are usually not as expensive as implants.

Disadvantages of Dentures

  • Dentures can be uncomfortable and even harmful to your overall dental health.
  • Dentures can shift inside your mouth. Dental adhesives do not always work to keep them in place.
  • Dentures should be removed at night.
  • Foods can get trapped under dentures and cause discomfort or decay to remaining teeth.
  • Dentures will require replacements and relines as the jaw ridges shrink.
  • Dentures will not prevent jaw bone structures from melting away.

Millions of Americans suffer from tooth loss due to a variety of factors, ranging from periodontitis to sports-related injuries. Untreated tooth loss can lead to a number of other concerns, including speech problems, nutritional deficiencies, shifting of the bite, and loss of self-esteem.

In the past, treatment for tooth loss was limited to dental bridges or dentures. Due to technological advances over the last several years, another option is now available: dental implants. Dental implants are becoming increasingly common due to their longevity, durability, and ease of use.

What are dental implants?

First of all, implants are widely misunderstood. The actual implant is a titanium post that is surgically implanted in the patient's jaw. This post serves as a replacement tooth root. After placement, the artificial tooth root fuses to the bone surrounding it. This results in a secure anchor so that a replacement tooth (or teeth) can be attached to it. The result is a natural looking-- and feeling-- smile.

Why should I choose implants?

If you are missing one or more teeth, implants might be an excellent option for you. There are many benefits to dental implants. Consider the following:

  • Aesthetic benefits. Unfortunately, many patients who are missing teeth report a loss of self-esteem. Often, they go to great lengths to avoid smiling. Implants help to restore a patient's natural smile and thereby also result in a boost in confidence.
  • User friendly. Compared to removable dentures, dental implants are very low maintenance. They do not require additional care; patients can simply brush twice a day, floss daily, and attend their regularly scheduled dental check-ups.
  • Long-lasting. Perhaps the best news is that dental implants are made to last! If well taken care of, implants can last a few decades-- or even a lifetime.

Need all your teeth removed?

It is often possible today to have all your teeth removed and replaced on the same day with fixed, dental implant teeth. With this technique called TeethXpress you never have to go without teeth. 4 or more implants are placed in the upper or lower jaw and fixed teeth are attached. Only your dentist can remove them. You can eat out, meet people, smile, and laugh like with natural teeth.

TeethXpress; New Teeth in a Day!

There’s nothing like your natural teeth.  Keep them for as long as you can.  But sometimes there is simply no viable alternative to having teeth out.  The psychological and physical trauma involved in the transition to removable dentures can be severe.  A new implant technique can make things a lot easier.  Imagine having teeth out and having fixed teeth placed and anchored to dental implants all on the same day.  You are never without teeth! What used to be a long and drawn out process has now, with the latest technology, become affordable and routine.

TeethXpress is a type of dental implant procedure that helps to resolve an important issue that most dental wearers will eventually suffer.  With traditional dentures, an individual's jaw bone continues to shrink and their once well-fitting dentures begin to slip and slide in their mouth. The shape of the face changes and ages. With TeethXpress, your dentures are permanently secured to your mouth with dental implants.  The palate is not covered, nothing is loose, and the jawbone structure is preserved.

With TeethXpress dental implants, patients are usually able to eat the healthy foods they like, such as salad and raw vegetables, and they do not incur pain from poor fitting dentures. There is no gum or mouth irritation and no need for messy denture adhesives.  You can be social and go to restaurants and meet new friends without worrying about embarrassing denture problems. Most importantly, the dental implants help to prevent the jawbone from melting away so patients are able to retain their normal-sized jawbone and facial structure.

If you're wondering about others who chose to have TeethXpress implants and their personal experiences, read Marc's story here and another patient, Gwen's story, here.  The before and after photos say it all. TeethXpress is a great way to restore a person's beautiful smile while giving them the ability to speak, eat and live without dental pain or discomfort.

TeethXpress can give you back the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.  Dentistry has never looked so good!

Dental Implants.  What the big deal?

Over the years. there have been many advancements in preventative dentistry. Unfortunately, despite best efforts, there are still those who suffer from missing or broken teeth. There are solutions that include fixed bridges held in by natural teeth, removable dentures, and dental implants. Each of these options has their pros and cons, however, dental implants have certain advantages the others lack.

Let's start with talking about how dental implants work. Implants can include a stand-alone tooth replacement, a fixed bridge to replace several teeth, or removable dentures held solidly in place with implants. The actual implant is a titanium fixture that replaces the root of a tooth. An abutment then connects a dental prosthetic, like a crown or a denture, to the implant. While the implant is permanent, the prosthetic is fixed or removable depending on the circumstances.

The benefits of implants include:

  • It can last longer than other solutions. With proper care, implants can last a lifetime.
  • Unlike removable dentures that sit on top of gums or crowns and bridges held in by natural teeth, implants bond to the jawbone and prevent the bone from melting away.
  • Implants do not require damaging natural teeth. Unlike fixed bridgework, adjacent teeth are not used to support implants.
  • Dental implants have the same look and feel as natural teeth, allowing you to comfortably eat your favorite foods.
  • Since stand-alone implants work just like your normal teeth, you can brush and floss like normal, helping to keep the remaining teeth healthy.
  • You can’t get cavities in a dental implant!

While dental implants seem to have just become popular recently, they have existed for more than 40 years. The procedure is now one of the gold standards for tooth replacement. All surgical procedures have some measure of risk, but the benefits of dental implants usually are far greater than the potential risks and are usually a better option than other solutions.

Got Gaps? Dental Implants may be the Solution.

Dental Implants Gettysburg

We often hear about incredible advances in medicine such as artificial organs grown in a laboratory and the latest artificial knees or hips.  We don’t hear as much about the latest advances in dentistry, but they have been just as stunning.

The last thirty years in dentistry, for example, has seen a revolution in the development and availability of dental implants.  Once considered experimental and as a last resort treatment, implants have become the best standard of care for many situations. They can replace a single tooth or all your teeth.   Implant dentistry is changing lives every bit as much as artificial knees and hips.

When we lose a tooth we actually lose a lot more.  Often 40 percent of the jawbone is lost within the first year of tooth extraction.  The face can collapse and we age prematurely.  Until implants were available, there was nothing we could do about this dramatic loss of facial structure.  Replacing a tooth or teeth with implants not only replaces the teeth, but even more importantly it prevents the melting away of the jaw structure.

Problems with your loose,  lower denture?  As few as two implants can hold a lower denture solidly in place.  You can eat healthy foods you had given up on and stop worrying about embarrassing denture slips.
