Options for People Who Dread Going to the Dentist | Samuels Dental Arts

People who dread going to the dentist often feel like there are no good options for getting the dental care they need. If you find yourself in this group it can be frustrating to feel like your fear is preventing you from taking action. Continuing in your current pattern of avoiding the dentist is an option but not a good one. Allowing your dread to keep you from getting proper dental care can have serious consequences. A better option is to find a way to manage your dread enough to get the dental care you need. Options for managing your dread include carefully choosing your dentist and looking into IV sedation anesthesia.

Avoiding the dentist

Avoiding the dentist is one option if you dread going to those twice yearly appointments. And, for a while, you may get away without having any serious consequences from skipping out on your dentist appointments. Brushing and flossing regularly at home can prevent major issues for a while. But, there are some things that you simply cannot deal with on your own. Plaque can harden and become tartar on your teeth which has to be scraped off to be removed. Tartar on the gum line can result in gum disease which can lead to a whole host of oral and physical problems. If you do develop cavities despite proper oral care there is no way to fix the issue without some type of professional intervention. Avoiding the dentist may seem like a good option if you dread going. But, the long-term impact of doing that can lead to painful and even dangerous problems.

Find the right dentist

Sometimes finding the right dentist can make all the difference in relieving your dread of going to your appointments. Take some time to research any dentist you are considering and learn about their training, experience, and what types of services they offer. You can set up a time to meet with a potential dentist without the pressure of an appointment. A consultation will allow you to determine if you will be comfortable with that dentist and give you the opportunity to discuss your unique needs.

Learn about IV sedation anesthesia

IV sedation anesthesia is an option worth learning about if you dread going to the dentist. If your avoidance is related to fear and anxiety then IV sedation anesthesia can help. Fearful patients can get years’ worth of dental work completed in just a few appointments with the help of IV sedation anesthesia. Under this type of sedation you will feel relaxed enough to have dental work completed without fear or dread.

If you dread going to the dentist you will have to find a way to overcome it if you want to keep up with routine dental care. Carefully choosing your dentist and learning about IV sedation anesthesia are two ways that you can effectively deal with your dread of going to the dentist.
