Tips for Deciding What Type of Dentist You Need

Tips for Deciding What Type of Dentist You Need | Samuels Dental ArtsIf you are looking for a dentist in the Gettysburg, PA area, there are plenty of options. As you look through the options, you may be wondering how to decide what type of dentist you need. The best dentist for you will depend on what type of help you need with your oral health and how you feel about going to the dentist in general. Keep reading for an overview of factors you should consider as you search for a dentist.

Consider the current condition of your oral health

The current condition of your oral health may impact what type of dentist you need. If there are esthetic elements of your smile that you are unhappy with then you should look into options for cosmetic dentistry. Look for a dentist that offers procedures such as in-office whitening, porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, and tooth-colored fillings. These cosmetic procedures can help you get a smile that you are proud to show off.

If you are missing one or more teeth the type of dentist you should consider is called a prosthodontist. Prosthodontists receive an additional three years of formal education to learn how to help patients create optimal oral health in both function and appearance. This includes additional training in creating and fitting tooth replacement options like dental implants and dentures. The fit and look of the tooth replacement option you choose will have a big impact on how you feel about your smile. When you work with a prosthodontist for tooth replacement you are using the most qualified dentist available for your needs.

The condition of your gums is another element of your oral health you should consider as you search for a dentist. The early stage of gum disease – gingivitis – can often be reversed by improving your oral care routine. Once it advances to the more serious form of gum disease – periodontitis – treatment requires intervention from a dentist. Dentists can receive additional training in diagnosing and treating gum disease. If this is an issue that is causing you problems, look for a dentist who has additional training treating gum disease.

Consider your feelings about the dentist

The way you feel about going to the dentist can also impact which one you should choose. If you struggle with fear of going to the dentist or general anxiety then you may find it difficult to even consider making an appointment. Fortunately, there are dentists who regularly work with fearful patients and have options to help you overcome those negative feelings. One of the best options for people who are afraid of the dentist is IV sedation anesthesia. IV sedation is an anesthesia option that can help you feel calm and relaxed during your dental visits. It can also give the dentist time to complete extensive dental work in just one or two visits. If you are hesitant to go to the dentist then consider choosing one who offers IV sedation anesthesia. It may be just the thing to help you overcome that hesitation and get the dental care you need.

When you choose a dentist, it is the beginning of a long-term relationship. If you stay on track with your dental care you will go in twice per year for preventative visits and any other time a problem arises. Carefully choosing a dentist who meets your needs will ensure that you have a positive experience for years to come.
