What Questions Should I Ask When Choosing a Dentist to Fit me for DenturesGetting properly fit for dentures can make a big difference in how you feel day in and day out. Well-fitting dentures will allow you to eat, smile, and talk comfortably and with confidence. In order to get the best fit you need to carefully choose the dentist who will help you in this process. It is easy to forget that you have a choice when it comes to finding someone to fit you for dentures. You do not have to go with your regular dentist or with a person that he or she recommends. The choice is yours. Take some time in this process to interview several dentists so you can choose one based off of the answers to pertinent questions. Questions you should ask when choosing a dentist to fit you for dentures include: Do you have training in fitting and designing dentures? What kind of experience do you have working with patients who need dentures? Are you board certified?

Do you have training in fitting and designing dentures?

Fitting patients for dentures is a process that requires technical knowledge and attention to esthetics. The way your dentures function and how they look both matter. You want to find a dentist who can design a set of dentures for you that fit properly so you can eat and talk normally when you have them in. You also want to find a dentist who will provide you with dentures that look natural so you can confidently interact with others. It is no small task to get the function and form of dentures right for a patient. In order to find a dentist who can provide the best possible results you need to ask about training. All dentists get basic training in working with dentures. But, there are some that continue with their formal education and get in-depth training in the process of fitting and designing dentures. These dentists are called prosthodontists and they get an additional three years of training after dental school to learn about dentures and dental implants. The additional training that a prosthodontist receives can make a big difference in how your dentures feel and look.

What kind of experience do you have working with patients who need dentures?

Training is important when it comes to fitting patients for dentures but it is not the only element that matters. Experience should also be one of your requirements as you search for a dentist to help you in the process of getting dentures. The dentists you talk to should be willing and able to outline their experience working with patients who need dentures. When you find a dentist who has the additional training mentioned above and extensive experience working with patients you will be in good hands.

Are you board certified?

There are very few prosthodontists that are board certified. In fact, only about 35 percent of prosthodontists become board certified. The process and examination of getting this elite designation is very difficult. When you work with a prosthodontist who is board certified you can rest assured that you have found one of the very best dentists to help you with your dentures.

The three questions listed above will help you navigate the process of choosing a dentist to fit you for dentures. This is an important decision and it is worth the effort to find the most qualified dentist available. If you are in the Gettysburg, PA area you have access to a board certified prosthodontist to help you get the dentures you need. You can learn more about Dr. Berger’s training and experience here.
