What to Expect When You Get Fit for Dentures

Posted by Julie Berger on June 6, 2019 9:00:00 AM EDT

What to Expect When You Get Fit for DenturesA well-fitting pair of dentures can truly be life-changing. Living with missing teeth or ill-fitting dentures can cause physical and emotional discomfort. It can be difficult to eat and talk when you are missing teeth or have dentures that do not fit correctly. In addition, if you are self-conscious about your smile you may avoid talking and interacting with others so they do not notice your teeth. When you finally get properly fitted with dentures you will find that you can eat, talk, and smile with confidence. There is absolutely no reason to continue suffering because help is available. The key to getting dentures that look and feel great is to work with a prosthodontist. A prosthodontist is a dentist with advanced training in fitting and designing dentures. When you go see a prosthodontist to get fit for dentures you can expect to get a thorough physical examination and the opportunity to talk about your needs.

Thorough physical examination

Your prosthodontist will examine the condition of your current teeth and gums when you go in to get fitted for dentures. This part of the examination will help her determine if any of your current teeth can or should be saved. The answer to that question will help your prosthodontist determine if you need full dentures, partial dentures, dental implants, or some combination of these options. The physical examination does not stop with your mouth because dentures impact much more than talking and eating. Dentures also have a big impact on how you look. They add structure to your face by standing in where your teeth and root system once were. In addition, the shape and size of the dentures will be taken into consideration based on the size of your face, mouth, and jaw. Your prosthodontist will carefully examine your face and jawline so she can consider them as she designs and crafts your dentures.

Opportunity to talk about your needs

Dentures are a very personal thing because they can impact several areas of your life. You eat, talk, and smile every day so it is important to make your needs known when you go in to be fitted for dentures. Your prosthodontist will ask you questions about your daily life in order to make sure she considers all relevant factors when creating your dentures. If you have any concerns or issues that could impact the type of dentures your need or your ability to use them then this appointment is the time to mention those concerns. You will have the opportunity to bring up any relevant information during this appointment because you are a partner in this process with your prosthodontist. If you already have questions or concerns go ahead and write those down so you can get them addressed during your appointment.

Getting fit for dentures is a big step on your journey toward having a confident smile once again. In order to have a good experience with your dentures it is essential that they fit you properly. Your prosthodontist knows the significance of getting the fit right so she will take her time during the appointment to ensure that every factor is examined and addressed.
